to rock the bay area for another night. you're looking live at walnut creek. temperatures above freezing for now - but not for much longer. now another look from the east bay - clear skies -but chilly - many people bundled up. good evening, i'm pam moore in the kron-4 weather center with jaqueline bennet. jacqueline - you're tracking this bay area wide cold snap? >> jacqueline: oit was very cold this morning reported temperatures right now in the 40's and '50's. 48 in san francisco, antioch and 50s in napa. temperatures are extremely cold tonight. the futurecast showing low temperatures. notice a lot of purple on your screen indicating temperatures in the 30's. temperatures even in the 20s in some areas that is a sexy what we are

seeing with 20's through santa rosa, fairfield, pleasanton a. 25 degrees in napa. 20's in livermore. temperatures near freezing 33 and a san jose. we have a freeze morning and a frost advisory coming up will take a look get that and how long this cold spell is going to last. >> pam: the freezing temperatures, combined with wet pavement - making for some dangerous road conditions. this is video from the santa cruz mountains - you can see the black ice. more on this story, later tonight. >> but first - flu season is causing major problems across much of the country. and it may just be getting started here. right now, influenza is "widespread" in 47 states - that's not including california since december - we now know there have been at least four flu- related deaths in our state. two in sacramento. and two in orange county.

tonight, kron4 is looking into how to protect youself. will getting a flu shot help keep you from getting sick --- here's kron 4's justine waldman. >> take a deep breath in, breath out. >> reporter: just like that. walt besse got his flu shot. he felt it was the right thing to do. >> "it is a very preventable diease. if i don't get the flu than i cant give it to someone else." >> reporter: at the department of public health. nurses have given out 5- thousand flu vaccines this flu season. and more people have visited just in the past week. partly because the flu outbreak covering most of the country. >> because it happened other places it allows us time to go ahead and get vaccinated dr. tomas aragon knows >> reporter: people are apprehensive about getting the vaccination. ideally children 6 months or older, pregant woman and

the elderly should get vaccinated. and people who work with large groups. >> "it is the people who are mildly ill who are out there spreading it to everyone else, so that is why we want people to get vaccinated bbecause you could be talking to somebody who looks perfectly fine but could be giving u influenza." >> reporter: as you can see, there are no lines at the adult immunization clinic. just plenty of spots to sit at. and flu shots to go around. walt is glad he did. >> that was easy >> "the flu shot takes about 2-3 weeks to take effect, so experts tell me there is still plenty of time to get one. in sf justine waldman kron 4 news." >> catherine: we may not have seen the worst of the flu season yet. california is just one of two states that have not yet reported a widespread outbreak. but elsewhere, the government said today the disease has now reached the

level of an epidemic. (coughing) >> catherine: coughing and sneezing and spreading germs. >> "influenza is a shifty virus." according to the centers for disease control the flu epidemic has expanded from 31 states two weeks ago. to 41 states last week. and 47 states this week. the strain this year is known as h3n2 and it is a particularly nasty one. >> we're seeing people, very high fever, um often they're laying down curled up, looking very unwell. quite severe, seeing rates of hospitalization higher than last 2 years and enough to give us all concern. the cdc says 20 children have died since the beginning of the flu season. the government doesn't track adult deaths, but health officials say the toll has reached the level >> pam: developing news out of the north bay this evening. a body has been found in a petaluma dump. this is video from our helicopter partnership with abc-7 news. over the scene. kron 4 crews are on the way -- we will have more on this story, tonight at six.

a developing story tonight. we are now one week into the search for victims of the speed freak killers -- wesley shermantine and loren herzog. the two carried out a drug -fueled killing spree in the 1980's and 90's. last year, deputies found victim remains of at least three people. believed to have been killed by the two. the remains were found in an abandoned well. >> this is it day 5. it's still there is a lot of work to look for victims. of the speed freak killers. and at this point no human remains have been recovered but it has been a very busy week. this is how it all happened according to the fbi. they would be searching an abandoned well associated

with the speed freak killers. this 10 x 13 area was cleared. wednesday, they announced that they were going to go into 75 ft. in the ground. late thursday, they announced that they hit the bottom and thatthis year, the f.b.i has taken over the case. and is day five of this search and there is still lots of work to be done pam when it comes to looking for victims of these guys.the speed freak killers. at this point no human remains have been recovered but it has been a busy week. >> pam: a second person has now been sentenced in a

richmond gang- rape case which made national headlines. ari morales - who was sixteen at the time of the crime - will spend 27 -years behind bars. police say, morales, along with five others, sexually assualted a teen girl outside a homecoming dance back in 2009. four other suspects have yet to stand trial. morales accepted a shorter sentence in exchange for a guilty plea. >> pam: several people were taken into custody today in oakland. it was all part of an early morning raid in an effort to crackdown on crime in that city. as kron four's terisa estacio reports tonight, police say, this is just the beginning of their attempt to stem the latest crime wave in oakland >> reporter: with violent crime - such as this homicide - where a woman and man were shot while at a drive through restaurant.haunting the residents of oakland.. city officials in response - have launched a program called operation ceasefire. - a multi-agency plan focused on stopping crime on the streets.

this friday. >> we have kept this promise and we know that when you commit this violence you are going to do everything to do to go after you >> multiple shootings and homicides. and victim's. in addition to detaining victim's they seized guns. >> this was linked to gang activity. associated. >> it is not clear how many of these detained will be arrested. but they are going to do everything officials deployed a part of the plan. as they executed 6 search warrants rounding up several known violent gang members. this is oakland police chief jordan >> we said it was going to stop, and we are doing something about it. >> reporter: in addition to detaining suspects. they

also seized >> reporter: police say it is unclear detained will be arrested. but they say they are going to do what they can to keep them from returning to the streets and committing more crimes. they have a right to bail out, but we will work with our law enforcement partners to try and make sure they are terisa estacio, kron 4. >> these gang raids were not just in oakland. four search warrants were executed there. in addition.officers staged a raid in el sobrante and one in santa cruz. this is all part of operation cease fire.which is a nationally recognized crime prevention program that has worked in cities across the country. the oakland model is aimed at reducing the number of murders and shootings. >> pam: in the north bay - a teenager visiting family. shot and killed. it happened just after midnight-- on drake avenue. the 17-year-old was found shot multiple times. the victims sister says, her brother did not even know anyone in the area.

>> pam: now to another developing story. the oil tanker that hit the bay bridge - has left the bay area. the coast guard says, officials deemed the 'overseas reymar' safe - although the oil tanker will require repairs before it can return to service. the ship hit a tower on the western span of the bay bridge monday. it had been anchored while investigators collected evidence, and interviewed crew- members. a probe into what caused the crash is underway. >> the new boeing 7-87 dreamliner. made it's local debut at san jose airport today. this is video from our

windy conditions by monday. a look a your it local extended forecast. cold. frigid. and really, not much recovery. things are going to start to warm up slightly and much more comfortable. >> pam: our team coverage continues now. cold weather and wet roads are a recipe for something called 'black ice.' kron 4's rob fladeboe has more on this hidden danger now from the santa cruz mountains. >> reporter: this was skyline boulevard just south of highway 9 above saratoga early friday morning. it snowed here on thursday and now that melting snow is turning to ice and not just on the shoulder. theres ice on the roadway too, black ice, so-called because it blends in with the black asphalt. from behind the wheel it looks like wet pavement but it's a mix of water and actual ice and can catch drivers by surprise and cause accidents.

and ancrews are dropping sand on those stretches of road where the ice tends to form, especially here on low-lying curves which see little or no sunshine during the day. the chp has issued a black ice alert for this and other bay area roads for the next few days, urging drivers to reduce their speed. the mercury has been dipping down into the upper 20's overnight and not much above 40 during the day so it's been a cycle of melt, freeze, melt, freeze, resulting in largely unpredictable patches of black ice. in saratoga, rob fladeboe kron 4 news >> pam: good news if you plan on traveling to southern california this weekend. highway five in the grapevine-- reopened after heavy snow and rain caused part of it to shut down early this morning. officials diverted traffic before drivers reached the worst parts. much like here in the bayarea -- many places in southern california are dealing with extremely cold weather. >> just one day away from

(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. >> pam: the small, central california city of taft is recovering -- one day after a gunman opened fire on campus. seriously injuring a student. tonight, we are learning more about the suspected student shooter -- a possible hit-list. and the teacher who is being credited with talking the accused gunman into putting down his shot-gun. grant lodes has been following developments with this story. and grant.this teacher risked his own life to save his students. >> yes, 28 other students quickly left that classroom

while the teacher, ryan heber and the school counselor talked the shooter down. taft is in kern county.35 miles south-west of bakersfield. police say the 16-year old gunman was targeting the victim another student.and the shooter claims those two students bullied him. today the victim is in surgery - having suffered serious wounds to his chest and abdomen. he's in a medically induced coma.but and is expected to survive. parents and students say the shooter had a hit list last year of people he wanted to kill. the high school has a full- >> we are going to have to do a lot more to protect our students there is always that bad apple. >> the shooter is in custody. >> the sheriff says that he will be charged with

attempted murder. as an adult? we do not know if he's going to be charged as an adult yet. the district attorney will be ruling on that next week. perhaps on monday he is 16 years old. >> the suspect and colorado's shooting will not be arraigned just yet. the shooter is in custody - the shriff in kern county says he will be charged with attempted murder - but it charged as an adult - >> catherine: the suspect in the colorado movie theatre shooting won't be arraigned just yet. james holmes was supposed to be back in court today. but he won't be entering a plea until march. defense attorneys asked for the delay -- arguing that they need more time to go through the evidence. the judge was concerned that if the arraignment moved too quickly - the case could end in appeal. holmes' attorneys might be going after a mental health evaluation by a doctor of their choosing. they've hinted at the possibility of an insanity defense. >> just one month after the shooting at a connecticut grade school. people who live in new-town are forming a group aimed at keeping communities safe. a gunman killed 26 people at sandy hook elementary -- and the non-profit group is called "sandy hook promise." guns in schools has been a

hot topic since the shooting.with very different nationwide reactions. one ohio school district, for example, has decided to allow staff members to carry concealed weapons - saying it's a move to protect students. >> catherine: vice president biden says he's interested in technology that would keep a gun from being fired by anyone other than the person who bought it. he made the comments today - as he met with representatives of the video game industry. it was the latest in a series of meetings - as he finalizes the white house response to the connecticut shooting. biden is wondering if the suspect would have been able to get his hands on a gun -- if he hadn't been using his mother's weapons. he hopes to deliver recommendations to the president by tuesday. >> a change in the u-s role in afghanistan is coming -- a few months ahead of schedule. it was announced after this meeting at the white house

today -- between president obama and the president of afghanistan. after a meeting with hamid karzai - president obama says the u-s will be able to speed up the withdrawal of u-s troops from afghanistan. also making it clear that he's considering leaving relatively few troops behind.after the nato combat mission ends in 2014. >> "starting this spring, our troops will have a different mission-- training, advising assisting afghan forces," >> catherine: >> i think the president for the help. >> catherine: behind the polite exchange.is the fact that hamid karzai made the rounds of washington leaders this week with a wish list that probably won't be fulfilled. although careful not to talk about specific troop numbers in public.karzai apparently wants a substantial u-s force left behind - perhaps as many as 15-thousand. the white house seems to be thinking more along the lines of 3 to 9-thousand.

and karzai was hoping that the u-s would supply the afghan army with the latest military hardware - including tanks and fighter planes. today both leaders declined to be drawn into president obama saying that he'll make his decisions in the coming months - based on the recommendations of his military commanders. a major sticking point between the two countries was addressed today. karzai says the u.s. has agreed to turn over control of the prisons that house terror suspects - to afghan control. >> jacqueline: a very cold it day and this morning. people walking through walnut creek. certainly, you need your jackets with temperatures in the 30's. and as we take a look outside the bay bridge toll plaza. clear however, that is going to make it colder with calm winds..
